So Long 2008…
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008Rather than ramble on about what I have, and haven’t been doing these last few weeks, i’m going to end the year with my “Best of”…
“The ‘is there only ever sport on TV??!!’ Award 2008″
1;

Portsmouth 1 Cardiff City 0 F A Cup Final 2008
What a day ! Pompey win the FA Cup for the first time since 1939. The whole day was unreal, and when “King” Kanu scored the winner, the rafters of the new Wembley were definitely rattled! Proved to be the highlight in something of a transitional year for Pompey. Big thanks to Pompey Nev and his crew for a great day out
2:
& Team GB at The Olympics and the Paralympics 2008
A superb showing from Rebecca Adlington and Chris Hoy was only part of a tremendous sporting acheivement, not least by the amazing efforts of the Paralympics team. Here’s hoping that something can be done to keep up the support for London 2012. Well done to all concerned.
“I broke my joystick through playing with it too much…Award 2008″ (PC & XBOX360)
Devil May Cry 4 - PC game of the year
Something of a surprise coming from Capcom, not known for their skills at converting from console to PC. “DMC4″ was, for me, perfect in every single way. Yes, it was linear, and yes, it had simple gameplay, but by God it was fun! Infamous as the game which actually cost £40 more than it should have done as I upgraded my PC just play it.Also came close to being my ‘360 game of the year as it was so good on both PC and ‘360. Honorable mentions to the brilliant “World of Goo” (shame on the pirates who downloaded this independent gaming gem for free) and “Far Cry 2″ (except for the traipsing across what seems miles of African savannah)

Galaga Legions - X-Box 360 game of the year
Galaga Legions showed all that was good about X-Box Live Arcade (”XBLA”) this year. For a minimal outlay, ‘360 owners could have in their possession a myriad of superb titles as Microsoft finally did some good. Galaga Legions updated the hoary old Galaga licence in ways that completely rejuvenated the game. Honourable mentions to “Braid”, “Ikaruga” and “Mr Driller Online”
“Go away I’m reading…Award 2008″

Michael Palin’s “New Europe”
Not normally one for “travel” books, I made an exception for “ex-Python” Michael Palin. I like his writing style and he kept me entertained with the tails of what goes on in a Europe now no longer bound by the “Iron Curtain”. It’s not all fur hats, Blinis and Vodka in Eastern Europe after all!
“Ale with twigs in award…2008″
Fuller’s Honeydew Ale
If only because some git at Tescos just before Christmas took the last 12 bottles off the shelf before I could get my hands on them ! Still, “Honeydew” is one of the best ales to drink for me both summer and winter. And as it’s got honey in it, I can pretend to “her indoors” that it’s also medicinal when I have man ‘flu.

The Killers “Day and Age”
Simply because it was so different to what had gone before. Brandon Flowers led his merry band on a journey through areas I’d not thought they’d touch. Duffy’s “Rockferry” and Mercury Rev’s “Snowflake Midnight” also got me to sit up and listen this year.

The X-box 360
Brilliant though it is, and I would rather be with it than without, the decision of my ‘360 to die just before Christmas was the most annoying event of the year. Even as I write this, it’s probably languishing in a warehouse in Frankfurt awaiting repair. Sometimes, Microsoft, I really HATE you as a company (see also “Games for Windows”)
Oh, come on, do I REALLY need to explain why Gordon features here ??!! Incidentally, the first image for Gordon on a google search appears on a site called “enjoy France”…says it all really, doesn’t it !
“The surfing the interweb when I should be working award…2008″
…Goes to The ‘Radio Archive’ torrent site I’ve spent more bandwidth on this site than any other this year. Tremendous archive of hard to find radio series that the BBC either didn’t bother or didn’t want to release to the masses.
And that…until I next remember to update my weblog…is that, so “Happy New Year” to everyone, not least the people I’ve spent time with on Facebook…in no particular order…
Hayley R (”Praaaaaallllliiiiiine !”)
Dave R (”My Bruvva”)
AMG (”2009 - a fresh start ?”),
Carla P (”Mi Amiga con loadsa big hugs”)
Skeddy (”Just think, you’ve had your last full year as a single man…”),
Samantha W (”Still as cheeky after all these years”),
Steve B (”From t’ Yorkshire tha knows”),
Cathy A (”Play Up Pompey - just without Adams”)
Linda C (”Why, cuzzin Lindarr, Jed is a-coming to visit you”)
And anyone else who thought they should have had a mention…you’ll be next, promise !
