“Every cloud”…..??
Sunday, September 7th, 2008Hello all ! No, I hadn’t forgotten to write in my blog, and yes, life has been hectic (not to mention more than a little crap) of late. I’ll start by saying a massive thanks to those people who’ve bothered to ask after my welfare…family(”Mum, Dad, Stepdad Vic”), friends (”Skeddy, Lou-lou, Chelsea Phil, Titch and Mr Titch, Clan Wimble, Linnnndaaaar”) and of course Dawn & Alan, my ever-present landlord and landlady. Thanks to all of you as I’m going through a very difficult time at the moment, and I know you’re all there for me.
Nevertheless, things are moving on apace at Castle Dunworking…
Game Over
Well, not quite, but since I was last here, I’ve completed Call of Duty 4 which I thought was a bit “meh”. Lots of gung-ho action, but all a bit “seen it before” for me. Rumours of the next COD changing the theatre of war might not tempt me to continue with this series
There was also Stranglehold which was stupidly, mindlessly fun. Laugh-out-loud moments when I compared it to the John Woo movies on which it was based. Very, very enjoyable and another one I regretted finishing so soon.
Last up was Doom 3 which much to my surprise had been gathering dust on my shelves for nearly four years. Now that I’d got a PC to do it justice, I’m happy to say I enjoyed it immensley. Those old enough might remember the fear-factor attached to the original “Doom”. Multiply that ten-fold and you’ll get the idea of how atmospheric this is. Add to that the graphics “bug” that made it far too dark on my ATI X1950 Pro, with the attendant shooting at anything that might, or might not, have large pointy teeth and big claws, this was well worth the wait.
And now ? I’ve just installed the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack…just in time for those long dark nights…Mwhahaha !
Disappointed with the reviews of Space Seige as I was looking forward to what could have been “Dungeon Seige in Space”. Turns out it’s a cross between Gauntlet, Deus Ex and the hoary old Expendable. I’ll see if the demo grabs me before deciding on whether to add it to any Christmas list.
Capell-no !
Came back from Pagham’s latest win to listen to the England V Andorra game…well, that’s 90-odd minutes of my life I won’t get back. Yes, we won, but by God it was boring. Andorra are a team who would struggle to give a game to Bognor Town, let alone a full international side. So what does Capello do ? Drop Beckham (Good), fail to pick Owen (Bad - no matter how short of fitness he was, this was Andorra, for chuffs sake !) and show that the shaky play in pre-season friendlies was worryingly like the way we’re going to be playing in proper matches. Even West Ham’s attempt to unsettle Croatia by head-hunting Slaven Bilic won’t be enough. I forecast a 2-0 win for Croatia on Wednesday, much as it hurts to write that.
Film club
Ever since I watched “Reaper” with Kevin Smith as creative consultant, I was curious as to where I’d heard from him before. Racheal then reminded me of “Jay and Silent Bob” who starred in some hilarious films during the late 90’s. Although I thought “Dogma” was dreadful, both the “Clerks” movies and “Jay & Silent Bob Strike back” are fine entertainment. Just waiting for the release of the new “X-Files” movie on DVD now.
Cats
We had both our cats spayed this week, and they don’t seem the worse for their ordeal. In fact they seem much more attentive than before. Hasn’t stopped them trying our patience with their trips over next door’s fences or onto the roof, but at least we know that if they did get out, that there wouldn’t be the patter of tiny kitten feet a couple of months later.
X-Box ecstacy
This month’s Official X-Box Magazine has done a wonderful thing in that they’ve featured over 20 of the best games from “X-Box Live Arcade” on their cover DVD. This means I won’t have to download some of these to try them out before deciding whether to buy. In between bouts of PC gaming, my X-Box has had some useage in the last few weeks. The benefits of our Godawful summer !!
Golden Olympians
No, I hadn’t forgotten….well done to all our medal-winning Olympians, and on a personal level I hope that those competing at the Beijing Paralympics will do as well. We’ve already got three golds at the time of writing…superb effort.
