Hypocrisy on a grand scale…

Monday, March 31st, 2008

OK…as a follow up to yesterday’s piece on regulation of Computer games…last night I watched the superb BEOWULF and noted the multiple stabbings, killings, dismemberment and general naughtiness…all in a DVD with a “12″ certificate….how can the government want to regulate video games when something like Beowulf is just as violent, if not more so, and still gets a “12″ certificate in the UK…

Go figure !

REALITY CHECK
Ok…who amongst you forgot to put your clocks forward in the UK today…Hmmm ?
Also…I was very interested in THIS STORY when it cropped up in the Daily Telegraph the other day….you read it here first, folks ! Remember my post entitled “Nanny Knows Best” back in February ? Did I not mention about Peer-to-Peer software ? And now…next week’s lottery numbers…

…but seriously…the big technology story over the last couple of days in the UK was Dr Tanya Byron’s report on Computer Games . Whilst I fully agree there should be some sort of certification within gaming, I think that a lot of people are missing the point that most children are able to separate fact from fantasy (this isn’t always true of some adults, but that’s another story altogether). When my father was young, there was a real war going on over his head, and he managed to survive it, as did lots of children from the war years. They didn’t grow up malajusted, in spite of seeing death and destruction in front of their eyes being played out for real.

It annoys me that the “Daily Mail” syndrome allows those who aren’t as informed as they might be to blame something as escapist as computer games for the ills that befall children these days. Perhaps if we hadn’t concreted over all the playing fields in schools, and shut down most of the swimming pools, and didn’t charge so much for sports club memberships then perhaps children wouldn’t spend so much time indoors. I’m not saying that computer gaming is something that shouldn’t be regulated, just that the ignorance of those who cannot differentiate between a group of computer created pixels and real life violence is laughable.

Thanks to one of the young ladies at work, I was able to see a you-tube video that summed up the whole facebook saga perfectly for me…it’s over there on the sidebar…

We’re on our way to Wembley !
Next Saturday marks one of the finest days yet for me as a Portsmouth fan. Although I won’t be there in body, I will in Spirit as the mighty Portsmouth FC take on West Bromwich Albion in the first of the 2008 FA Cup semi finals. “Pompey Nev” is going, and will no doubt keep me in touch as I watch Pagham against Worthing United (I know it hasn’t got the same ring to it, but hey, there’s always the Cup Final if Portsmouth get there. What am I saying…”if” ? I mean “WHEN” ! PLAY UP POMPEY
