McLaren F*** 1 !

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

So….long time no see…excuses ? Well, one has been “Stranglehold”. Very, very playable, and as I mentioned before, great fun. I’ve also been playing Painkiller:Overdose which, I have to say, is a bit crap in places. Yes, it’s got those knock-your-socks off graphics, and it’s a no-nonsense “on-rails” shooter, but it just seemed like a fan-made mod for the game. Perhaps it was originally, I don’t know. Still - good for a quick blast.

I’ve also, unfortunately(for my phone bill), found THIS SITE which offers game downloads for my E-61. As a consequence, I’ve added a new side-bar mention for whichever game is draining my mobile’s battery. At the moment it’s R-Type and it’s superb. Almost facsimile copy of the coin-op original. Try that on an I-Phone ! (actually, you probably could - and a slight apology - only slight, mind…although the I-Phone doesn’t have 3G, it does have Wi-Fi, which can be quicker in “Wi-Fi hot spots” apparently…but then again my E-61 has Wi-fi AND 3G…so, nope, forget the apology - the I-Phone is still a waste of money!)

What else….Oh, been testing out the new features on “Office 2007″ as I was lucky enough to be given it. And…well…after getting over the fact that Microshaft have moved all the useful functions and hidden them away, it’s a very, very useful tool. Word 2007 does all sorts of stuff which makes producing the programme for Pagham MUCH easier. Still, it’s not “cool” to praise Microsoft, so I’d better stop.

The football on Wednesday ? I wasn’t probably the only one slightly pleased to see us lose. It meant that McLaren HAD to go. He was hopelessly out of his depth, and his stubborn-ness in not changing things until half-time beggars belief. I’ve been talking to some colleagues about this, and we feel that the right thing to do would be to re-introduce the Home Internationals. None of the home countries have qualified, the FA could do with the cash (if only to get someone to install proper drainage on the Wembley pitch !) and it would create interest. My only concern is the whispers about Harry Redknapp being in line for the England manager’s job. Oh no you don’t Mr Barwick. Keep your mitts off Harry !!

Aye…phone….

So…been and spent £270 on your Apple I-Phone have you ? Not forgetting the exlusive contract with 02 that you had to sign up with. You did, of course, remember that when the I-Phone is released in France that it will, due to French Law, be “unlocked” and usable on any network, didn’t you…Ever been had ? (for the record, I’d not touch an I-Phone with a bargepole - Nokia’s N95 does all it does and more, for less, as does my E-61, and no doubt there are other handsets which do more than the I-Phone). Hearing the Apple representative squirm when asked about the non-appearence of “3G” on the I-Phone when on Radio 5 the other night made my week !

On a more serious note, you may remember that I though the anti-hype over “Manhunt 2″ was unwarranted. Well, having watched the Uncensored video of the game footage, I’m no longer sure…It’s graphic (definitely NSFW), and in this case I think the programmers have gone too far. It takes me back to the infamous “video nasties” of the 1980s.

I managed to get Stranglehold working on the PC after a lot of faffing around with graphics drivers and the like. And I’m chuffing glad I did. This is one “fun” game. Violent, yes, but in a cartoon way - just like the original John Woo films. Best of it’s type I’ve played in ages, and will no doubt be the cause of many missed football deadlines for a couple of weeks.
